Recent Projects

 

*£2000 contribution to Gala week.

* Several small grants for small community projects including a community library at the school, community garden project at the school, upgrade of Heritage centre facilities and some financial assistance for a new cafe start up in the Heritage centre.

*Direct Subsidy to community owned shop to keep a post office on the island and direct subsidy to keep the cost of freight to the island from rising and maintain the current level of service.

* One third contribution to new shop van.

*Purchase of two empty properties and 8 acres of land for community owned affordable housing project.

*Community shop rennovations

Eday Partnership managed a grant from BIG Lottery to rennovate the shop with new energy efficient lighting, fridges and freezers, disabled access WC facillities, new shelving and flooring, new counter including space for the new post office and two extensions to provide more shop space and a new tea and coffee area.

 

* Electric transport

 

Eday Partnership has the islands first electric car inkeeping with our interersts in renewable energy and sustainability our electric car is used for Eday partnership and our trading subsidiary business. The car is charged off the 6Kw turbine at the community hostel. We are currently investigating ways to use the car more to support community transport. 

 

 

 

Other past Projects

 

                                               *Gateway House. "The Grind" Is a three bedroomed enegy efficient house which was purpose built by Orkney Islands Council for a project with Eday Partnership to allow people the chance to experience living in our community. The project has been very successful and has brought six families to the island  three with young children. Please contact us if you are interested in being our next occupier! 

 

 * First grid tied wind turbines on the island for community buildings

Eday partnership assisted with grant applications and project management for 6Kw grid tied wind turbines for the Heritage centre, community shop and community Hostel. Not only do these provide clean power but also provide useful income for the organisations through the feed in tariff.

 


* Eday Partnership’s Powerdown Officer, commissioned a study into Local Foods, an Eday Local Food Study was produced by Dr Michael J Hancock.

* Eday Partnership sourced funding to carry out a pilot
Inter North Isles Fast Passenger Boat Service, this was a
major project with some elements proving to be very
successful and others less so.

A great deal of information was gained from this project for the Northern Isles. Information gained
from this pilot project has been shared with orther North Isles considering such a venture

* Eday Partnership sourced funding to put in place an Oral History project worker for the Heritage 
Centre to allow data to be collected to record Eday’s Heritage.

 

Our Biggest Project to date was our Community Wind Turbine

 Eday Partnership could not rely solely on long-term grant funding for it’s day-to-day running or community projects it undertakes and to this end Eday Partnership set about acquiring a Wind Turbine for Community Benefit. Eday Partnership secured funding from BIG Lottery to start the project.


 Eday Partnership proceeded to set up a trading subsidiary, Eday Renewable Energy who worked extremely hard to source further funding, complete and now run the Turbine Project.

One such project working with Community Council the Slipway to enable small

 

 boats on Eday to launch at the pier.

 

 

* A Marshalling yard and storage shed to allow the community and local shop better facilities

 

 

*Heritage and Visitor Centre the renovation of an old chapel
into the Heritage and Visitor Centre allowing visitors and
locals a beautiful space with bar, fully equipped kitchen
and an insight into Eday’s history

Eday Heritage & Visitor Centre was assisted by providing funding and assistance from the

Local Development Officer, Eday Partnership also provided an Oral History Project Officer

to record Eday's Heritage

 

* Eday Hostel upgrade & Camping area




Eday Partnership secured funding for a full renovation with

individual rooms

walk in shower room’s

newly fitted lounge

disabled facilities



This has allowed Eday visitors to have a more enjoyable experience

*Eday Partnership sourced funding to produce 5 brochures on Birds, Flora, Archaeology, Eday’s Heritage and Seashore. These were produced by the Ranger on behalf of Eday Tourist Association.


 


* Eday Partnership sourced funding to allow the shop to install a new diesel tank


 *Eday Partnership sourced funding to put in place a Ranger Service to promote Eday, 5 new footpaths were completed with landowners, walks, talks and School Projects.


*Eday Partnership provided various Courses – Welding, Servewise, Dyking, Butchery, Minute taking, Personal Licence Holders, LGV Drivers, Youth Workshop.


*Eday Partnership produced a Skills Survey to identify skills that were lacking on Eday.

* Eday Partnership sourced funding for a new Eday Website used for marketing of accommodation
and Services and to to promote our beautiful island on behalf of Eday Tourist Association 

                 
 

 

 

* Eday Partnership facilitated research by the University of Flensburg to measure the 
additional costs attached to island living and carbon footprint.

 

* Eday Partnership in conjunction with OIC
embarked on a Gateway House for Eday to allow
potential new residents to try island life, this was
completed and in May 2010 the first tenants moved in.

The Gateway House is environmentally friendly with
ground source heating and heat reclamation.
Eday Partnership named the Gateway House the Grind which is the old Norse word for gateway

 

 

 

 * Eday Partnership sourced funding to provide Youth Workshops & Club Facilities


*Eday Partnership sourced funding for a Composting Development Office who sourced the provision of green cones to Eday Households, also running course and giving advice on composting and recycling.


* In 2007 Eday Partnership sourced funding to produce a promotional DVD to increase tourism to Eday.


*Eday Partnership sourced funding for the provision of three 6 KW wind to heat Turbines for the Shop, Hostel and Heritage Centre.


* Eday Partnership undertook a Housing Survey to determinate the extent of fuel poverty on Eday


*Eday Partnership together with OIC secured 4 swinging buoys at Backaland and Calf Sound to enable passing yacht
 to stop at Eday.


*Eday Partnership together with Eday Tourist Association produced signage at Kirkwall Pier to promote Eday.

* Eday Partnership is a Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable status; Our Board is made up of 13 Directors/Charity Trustees from the membership.



Since conception Eday Partnership have employed a Ranger, Community Development Officer, Powerdown Officer, Recycling and Composting Officer, Oral History Project Worker, Turbine Development officer, Company Secretary, Administration Officer and Minute Taker.
